For over 40 years, Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival has been lighting up the Colne Valley during February half-term, bringing a magical glow to the village that has become legendary.
But where does the name Moonraking come from? Legend has it that local smugglers were caught trying to retrieve contraband from a canal under the light of the moon. When challenged, they claimed they were trying to rake the moon out of the water with their rakes. The tale of these supposedly foolish moonrakers has become part of local folklore, celebrated through the festival’s wonderful lanterns, creativity and storytelling.
Originally established by Satellite Arts in partnership with Slaithwaite Community Association, the festival has grown and evolved into an exciting celebration of creativity, crafts, storytelling and community spirit. It brings people together through the shared experience of making, performing and celebrating, creating a spectacular spectacle of light and colour in the heart of winter.
Today, Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival is an independent charitable organisation run by local people, proudly celebrating the uniqueness of Slaithwaite as a place to live, work and visit.
February can feel like a long, dark month, and by half-term we are all ready for a little lift! The festival provides a welcome burst of light, colour and creativity. At its heart is a week of lantern-making workshops, where people of all ages come together to create wonderful willow lanterns in all shapes and sizes. These workshops are complemented by storytelling, music, performances and creative activities, building towards a spectacular lantern parade and festival finale.
Be part of the festival!
Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival relies on grant funding, sponsorship and community spirit to bring its lantern celebrations to life. Traditionally held every other year, the festival is working towards bringing the next Moonraking Festival to Slaithwaite in 2028 – so watch this space!
There are lots of ways to get involved, and new volunteers are always welcome. Whether you would like to join the organising committee, become a trustee and help shape the charity’s future, support us as a local business or fundraiser, or explore creative collaborations, we would love to hear from you.
